Choosing a Day Care

What type of care do you prefer for your child? - A childcare centre, your child at the home of an Educarer, or a nanny in your own home.

If you are looking for care outside of your home then here are a few things you should consider when making your choice.

First Impression - look for

  1. First Impression - trust the feelings you have during the first 5mins of any visit.
  2. How were you and your child greeted - you should feel at ease and welcomed.
  3. Was the centre / home clean - have a look at the bathrooms and toilets
  4. Were the children happy - laugher is always a good sign.
  5. Were the children engaged - what activities are taking place.
  6. How did the teachers / carer interact with the children - there should be respect shown on both sides.
  7. Learning activities - have a look at the wall displays , newsletters, activities set up.
  8. Out door area - If your child is more physical and likes to be running and exploring, will their needs be met ?

Things to ask about

  • Daily routine - get a feel for what your child will be doing.
  • Meals – are meals provided ? What will your child be eating ?
  • Nap times - if your child likes a day sleep how will that be catered for ?
  • What is the teacher / carer ratio to children.
  • School readiness - ask about the educational programmes in place.
  • Outings - will your child be off site at any time.
  • Feedback - how will you be informed about your childs progress ?
  • Fees - have the fees been explained to you ?
  • Flexibility - how flexible will the centre / carer be if you are running late ?
  • If your child has a special interest i.e. music, drawing, role-playing ask how the centre / carer will nurture that interest.
  • Holidays - do the opening days and hours work with your schedule ?
